Lip Product Formulation R&D Report: Base Formulas and Variations

 1.0 Introduction and Report Objectives

This document serves as a formal Research & Development report detailing the analysis and documentation of foundational base formulas for lip gloss and lipstick products. Its primary objective is to establish a comprehensive guide for future product development, ensuring consistency, quality, and efficient iteration across our color cosmetics portfolio. The strategic value of these standardized architectures lies in their ability to meet diverse and growing market demands for both high-performance vegan and traditional formulations.
This report provides a quantitative analysis of:
• Core Base Formula Architectures
• Comparative Analysis of Wax Systems (Vegan vs. Beeswax)
• Functional Impact of Key Ingredients
• Protocols for Pigmentation and Scenting
• Troubleshooting and Formulation Adjustment Guidelines
This analysis will begin with an examination of the two primary lip gloss base formulas developed to meet distinct sensory and performance targets.
2.0 Lip Gloss Base Formula Analysis
A well-defined lip gloss base is of strategic importance as it dictates the product's primary sensory attributes, including shine level, texture, viscosity, and pigment suspension capability. This section analyzes the two core gloss architectures developed: the "Glass Gloss," designed for a lightweight, high-shine finish, and the "Juicy Gloss," engineered for a cushioned, high-viscosity feel.
2.1 Glass Gloss Base: High Shine, Lighter Feel
The formulation goal for the Glass Gloss base is to achieve an ultra-shiny, non-sticky finish with a "wet glass" appearance. This lighter-feeling formula is designed for superior clarity and a smooth, comfortable wear.

2.2 Juicy Gloss Base: Cushioned, High-Viscosity Feel
The Juicy Gloss base is formulated to create a thicker, more cushioned texture that provides a "juicy," syrupy appearance on the lips. Its higher viscosity makes it exceptionally effective at suspending a greater load of pigments and micas for more saturated color payoff.

The principles of selecting waxes and butters to control texture and structure, as demonstrated in these gloss formulas, are similarly applied to the development of non-glossy, matte systems.
3.0 Velvet Matte Lipstick Base Formula Analysis
Formulating a successful velvet matte lipstick presents the challenge of balancing a non-glossy, soft-focus finish while mitigating transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and maintaining lip hydration. To meet different application needs, two distinct formulation variants have been developed: a firm "Bullet-Hard" base for traditional lipstick formats and a "Soft Balm Matte" base for enhanced comfort.
3.1 Bullet-Hard Velvet Matte Base: Structure and Precision
This formulation is engineered to create a traditional, firm lipstick bullet. The robust structure provides crisp, precise edges upon application and delivers classic, high-performance matte wear.

Having established these base formulas, the following section provides a deeper analysis of the functional roles of their individual components.
4.0 Functional Analysis of Key Ingredient Classes
Understanding the specific contribution of each ingredient is paramount to achieving the desired texture, performance, and stability in the final product. This section deconstructs the base architectures to isolate the functional contribution of each ingredient class.
4.1 Waxes: Structure and Stability
• Candelilla Wax: Provides a firm, slightly glossy structure. As a vegan alternative to beeswax, it creates a harder, more rigid lipstick bullet.
• Beeswax: Creates a creamier, softer texture in both gloss and lipstick formats. It requires a slightly higher concentration than candelilla for equivalent structure. This is due to beeswax's lower molecular rigidity and different crystalline structure compared to candelilla wax, necessitating a greater mass to achieve equivalent gelling strength and structural integrity.
4.2 Butters: Cushion and Comfort
• Shea Butter: Imparts a soft, cushioning feel and enhances comfort, making it particularly valuable in non-drying matte formulas.
• Cocoa Butter: Contributes significantly to the structural integrity and firmness of the product, especially in solid lipstick bullets. The shift from a cocoa-dominant ratio in the Bullet-Hard formula to a 1:1 ratio with shea butter in the Soft Balm Matte formula is the primary driver of the textural change from "structural" to "comfort-focused."
4.3 Oils: Shine, Glide, and Pigment Dispersion
• Castor Oil: The primary driver of high shine and characteristic "grip" in lip glosses. It also serves as an essential pigment wetting agent, ensuring smooth dispersion and color payoff in all formulas.
• Jojoba Oil: Provides a silky, smooth glide and is noted for its high stability.
• Squalane: Utilized in the Glass Gloss formula to contribute to a light, non-sticky, and "glassy" sensory feel.
• Sweet Almond Oil / Fractionated Coconut Oil (FCO): These oils are incorporated to add slip and reduce overall viscosity.
4.4 Powders: Texture and Finish
• Kaolin Clay: The primary agent responsible for achieving a "matte blur" or soft-focus effect in lipstick formulations.
• Arrowroot Powder: Works in synergy with kaolin clay to enhance the matte finish and help the formula set on the lips.
The next section details the standardized procedures for incorporating color and scent into these base materials.
5.0 Pigmentation and Scenting Protocols
Standardized protocols for adding color and scent are critical for achieving product consistency, ensuring safety, and delivering a premium user experience. The following procedures are essential for preventing common formulation issues, such as grittiness, and for maintaining batch-to-batch uniformity.
5.1 Pigment Dispersion Method
A mandatory two-step pigment dispersion process must be followed to prevent grittiness and ensure uniform color distribution in the final product.
1. Wetting & Dispersion Phase: All dry pigments (and powders for lipstick) must be pre-mixed with 2-3 times their weight in a portion of warm castor oil, the designated dispersion medium.
2. Incorporation: This pigment mixture must be mashed with a spatula until it becomes a silky, smooth paste. Only then should it be stirred thoroughly into the main melted batch until fully homogenized.
The approved lip-safe cosmetic pigments for these formulations include iron oxides, manganese violet, ultramarines, and micas. For all vegan formulations, carmine is to be strictly avoided.
5.2 Scent Application and Dosing
The following rules must be adhered to when scenting any lip product formulation:
• Timing: Scent must be added off-heat, when the mixture is warm but not hot, to prevent the evaporation and degradation of volatile aromatic compounds.
• Safety: Only lip-safe flavor oils specifically formulated for cosmetic use are permitted.
• Standard Dosing: The standard scent strength is established at 0.5% of the total batch weight. This translates to 0.050g per 10.00g gloss batch and 0.075g per 15.00g lipstick batch.
• Formula Adjustment: It is critical that the weight of the added scent be precisely subtracted from the castor oil allocation in the formula. This maintains the 100% total batch weight and ensures the integrity of the base texture.
These protocols transition into the troubleshooting guide, which addresses common issues that may arise during development.
6.0 Formulation Troubleshooting and Adjustment Matrix
This section provides a quick-reference guide for resolving common texture and application issues encountered during formulation. These adjustments act as "formulation dials" that can be used to precisely refine product characteristics during the development cycle.

These adjustments allow for precise, targeted control over the final product's sensory profile and performance characteristics.
7.0 Master Formulation Tables with Shade & Scent Adjustments
The following tables represent the master reference and single source of truth for quality control and manufacturing. They integrate the established base formulas with specific pigment loads and scent options. By pre-calculating all variables, these tables are designed to eliminate calculation errors in production and ensure perfect 10.00g or 15.00g batch totals.
The core calculation governing these tables is: Final Castor Oil = Base Castor Oil - Total Pigment Weight - Total Scent Weight

More Than Words: How Arreqqana Redefines Desire, Intimacy, and Sound

The language we speak is more than a tool for communication; it is the very architecture of our reality. The words we have at our disposal shape how we perceive emotions, interpret art, and understand the world around us. When a language lacks a word for a certain concept, that concept can become harder to grasp. Conversely, when a language possesses a unique and specific term for a complex idea, it grants its speakers a more nuanced lens through which to experience life. The fictional language of Arreqqana offers a profound example of this principle. It is a language built not just for communication, but for a deeper, more textured experience of existence. Within its grammar and vocabulary lie concepts for music, love, and desire that are fundamentally different from our own, offering a glimpse into another way of being. It seems only natural that a culture that treats sound as a multi-sensory, spiritual force would also develop specialized linguistic tools for its most profound ...

Peppiqhilala and Jarruwano

(explanation in sajiyuta script) In this tender nighttime scene, Jarruwano of the House of Tarraqhavvezz leans over to gently kiss Peppiqhilala’s forehead as she sleeps, wrapped peacefully beneath soft blue-and-white floral blankets. His long black hair cascades forward, brushing near her curls as his presence radiates warmth and guardianship. Dressed in his ceremonial black blazer with a crisp white shirt slightly unbuttoned, a sacred pendant resting on his chest, Jarruwano’s expression is one of silent devotion and unspoken love. Peppiqhilala sleeps serenely, her face lit with calmness, framed by her flowing curls. Her hands rest gently over the blanket, relaxed and trusting in the protection surrounding her. The entire moment is bathed in a sacred stillness—an unspoken vow between protector and beloved. This is not merely a gesture of affection; it is a vow of watchfulness. Jarruwano, as one of Peppi’s chosen guardians within the great lineage of Tarraqhavvezz, channels his lo...
